BACK TO SCHOOL
September means back to school for millions of adults and children across the nation.
For some harassed parents it will be cause for celebration, for others dismay as their precious little ones leave the nest for the first time. Teachers everywhere are overflowing with enthusiasm, as they ready themselves for 'changing lives' — once they can get beyond roll call, grading and faculty meetings.
What If you knew everything BEFORE you even got to class? Well you can be a smarty pants with our World and US History atlases:

HOMEWORK EXCUSE: "The river swept away my homework"
Spare a thought for the alumni of the local high school in Fugong, Yunnan Province, China, who, until a couple of years ago were forced to cross 200 meter wide raging rapids to get to class using a zipwire! Lucky for them, a TV documentary highlighted their dangerous plight, and brought together donations for this bridge — almost as scary if you ask me...

JET PROPELLED STUDENTS
It can be hard to get back into the swing of the school year again. If you find yourself running behind, the first rule is 'don't panic'. Relax, invest in a healthy, hearty breakfast, then make sure you catch this.
A Phantom jet engine will propel this school bus to more than 300mph, meaning there might even be time to share vacation stories before lessons.
And if you think that bus was fast, you should see the high performance rollers on these super pull-down maps available now for your classroom.

It is exciting to see these centers of learning take on environmental challenges head-on.
Here are the top 5:
Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT scored highest with a range of renewable energies including biomass and biogas, from Cow manure on Vermont dairy farms.
Dickinson College, Carlisle PA includes a high efficiency energy plant on campus, and also runs a biodiesel shop. Sustainability Studies is integrated across the curricular.
The appropriately named Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA charges a clean energy fee to its student body which is used to fund renewable energy initiatives, including Geothermal, Solar and Wind Power, via local utility providers.
University of Washington, Seattle, WA runs an annual competition — The Environmental Innovations Challenge across multiple disciplines. Successful entries include a system for converting woodchips to gas, and a real time smart phone app for vehicle fuel economy.
At Stanford University, Stanford, CA, the $225 million, 10 year Global Climate and Energy Project invests in projects which use technology to lower greenhouse gas emissions, addressing ways to make them commercially viable.
Another organization 'keen to be green' is National Geographic, and we are offering 10% off of all of the NG products in our store while stocks last (no coupon required, instant savings!)
