Travel Spotlight — Float
into New York
Even
now they are beginning to get ready for the Thanksgiving Parade
in New York. The floats are being made in the old Tootsie Roll
factory in Brooklyn, and the balloon characters are in process
of testing and cleaning. It's still not too late
to plan your trip, even if it is only to your armchair after
the feast and the distance of the TV remote.
Check out our great selection of Manhattan and New York maps
and let your imagination take to the sky!
Highlights from the Parade's History*:
- 1924: First Year of the Christmas Parade, led by 400 employees and animals from the Central Park Zoo.
- 1925/1926: Bears, lions, and tigers were added to the live animals used, but the use of these animals had to be discontinued because they scared children.
- 1927: Macy's introduces the world famous giant helium balloons. The first balloons included Felix the Cat and Toy Soldier.
- 1957: During the Parade, a downpour fills the Popeye's cap with gallons
of water, the weight causes him to drift and drop the accumulated rainfall
on surprised spectators.
- 1958: Due to a helium shortage, the balloons are brought down Broadway on cranes.
- 1975: The Dino the Dinosaur balloon was inducted into the American Museum of Natural History as an honorary member.
- 1989: The parade marches on through its very first snowstorm.
- Helium: Macy's is the world's second largest consumer of helium. The United States government is the first.
