Come one, come all geography enthusiasts, travelers, explorers, eternal learners: this month we’re making maps about Black History Month and Explorers. Why Explorers? February 3 is International Map Day, which we celebrated this year by writing about the life of Marco Polo and his adventures along the Silk Road. Be on the lookout this month for maps and stories about important Black explorers, like Mansa Abubakari II, known as “The Voyager King”; Esteban, who led an expedition in the 14th century; and Mae Jemison, the first Black woman astronaut. We’ll also show you how to use a sextant, test your navigation knowledge, and dive into the culture of the legendary Polynesian explorers.
