Discovery

Dear Educators,

Here at Maps101, we are particularly excited by stories of human discovery. The explorers of the past and the scientists who changed how we see the world are some of our favorites! This week, our resources showcase Darwin’s discoveries and adventures! This year has been, and continues to be, quite
an adventure for all of us. As the school year is in full swing, we hope you are making discoveries along the way that are making the journey feel worthwhile.

noticed about species that live on this Earth...they adapt in order to survive! This GNN Junior article has graphics, leveled text, and comprehension questions! Ready to view, save as a pdf, or email!

Charles Darwin Visits the Galapagos

Now we might be a bit biased, but nothing shows Darwin’s adventures abord the HMS Beagle quite like a map! This week’s map complements this story of discovery with a kid-friendly map of Darwin’s route.

Galapagos Islands

This National Geographic video shows some of the fantastic creatures in the Galapagos! Seeing some of the sights and sounds of the islands where Darwin explored really shows you why it caught his attention! Plus, if nothing else, there are some super-cool iguanas in the video!!

Why We Do What We Do

Last week we showed you some of our discovery-learning-based Lesson Maps™. We believe in the benefits of discovery-based learning, and we hope that our resources provide you with opportunities and assistance for using it in your lessons. Discovery-based education gives students ownership of their learning and can keep them very engaged. We like to ask ourselves the question, “What can we help students learn for themselves?”
