Exploring Maps101

Dear Educator,

Your school or district has provided you with a subscription to Maps101. If you haven’t used it before or if you are accustomed to your favorites, it’s time to explore more of what Maps101 offers. Of course, we have hundreds of maps—thematic maps, interactive maps, atlases, outline maps, and more. But Maps101 includes a rich variety of content for your classroom. Let’s take a look at some of the goodies available to you with your subscription.

Games

Student engagement is a perennial challenge. Our collection of games allows you to assess student knowledge while giving them the opportunity to actively engage online. Our collection includes games based on Earth Science, geographic knowledge, crosswords, state capitals, and even elementary-level games to introduce geographic basics to younger learners. Use this link to add some games to your repertoire.

Geography News Network

Finally, we don’t want to forget to include Geography News Network (GNN). Every week, our editorial staff writes an article accompanied by a map made by one of our cartographers to discuss current events, to delve into the lives of important people, to explore new scientific discoveries, and more. Each article includes critical-thinking questions to stimulate classroom discussion. Every article also includes vetted additional websites to extend the content. Articles are levelled for students, not adult readers, and are intended for grades 6-12. We have a special series of GNN Junior articles meant for grades 3-6 that is released about once a month. For the month of February, we are focusing on Black History Month. If students are unfamiliar with who Henrietta Lacks was, have them read the latest GNN to find out why she is important to know.
