Taking Flight

Dear Educators,

We have entered a new era. Last week saw the inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris. Tensions and troubles have rarely been higher, which will likely motivate the new administration to move with high velocity. These next few weeks and years will no doubt be interesting and eventful!

The plane is taking off, there will likely be turbulence along the way, but what we do know is that we will certainly land in a different place. Where exactly that will be, it remains to be seen.

Courage and skill are going to be very important to President Biden as he takes on the responsibility of leading our country through our current struggles. Charles Lindbergh is a historical figure who embodies those characteristics. Learn more about his life and adventure in this week’s GNN article.

Charles Lindbergh's Flight

As with any journey, the route is the most important part! This map shows the impressive path that Lindbergh took to reach Paris from New York as he successfully completed the world’s first solo transatlantic flight.

Abraham Lincoln

Time will tell what President Biden will be remembered for, and what successes and failures he will experience in his new job. This lesson map takes students through an understanding and analysis of President Lincoln’s tenure and challenges students to explore his character, his successes and failures, as well as the overall impact he had as a president. Teaching students to go through this analysis of former leaders will help them understand the process as they watch the current administration in action.

While all of us have the potential to be leaders, few of us are born with the skills and competencies intrinsic to the role. Certainly, not everyone is capable of being a presidential-level leader, but whether it’s in our classrooms, our jobs, or our families, leadership skills are human skills. Learn more about what science tells us about effective leadership and how we can develop these skills within ourselves, in this Harvard Business Review article.
