Mexico, also known as the United Mexican States, is a federal republic located in the southern part of North America below the United States. The southern and western parts of Mexico are bordered by the Pacific Ocean, the southeast by Belize, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea and the east is bordered by th Gulf of Mexico. Mexico is the third largest country in North America and is the 14th largest country in the world, after Saudi Arabia, covering almost 2 million square kilometres of land area. With an estimated population of over 120 million inhabitants, Mexico has been home to various ancient Mesoamerican civilizations including the Mayans and the Aztecs.

Mexico is home to 31 official states which are subdivided further into municipalities and 1 federal district. The states of Mexico include: Chihuahua, Sonora, Coahuila, Durango, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas, Jalisco, Zacatecas, Baja California Sur, Chiapas, Vera Cruz, Baja California, Nuevo Leon, Guerrero, San Luis Potosi, Michoacan, Campeche, Sinaloa, Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Puebla, Guanajuato, Nayarit, Tabasco, Mexico, Hidalgo, Queretaro, Colima, Aguascalientes, Morelos, and Tlaxcala.

The federal district, Capital and largest city of Mexico is Mexico City. It is often referred to as "D.F.," pronounced "day-eff-ay," and refers to Distrito Federal.

Iztapalapa, Ecatepec de Morelos and Guadalajara are the next largest cities with populations of approximately 1.6 to 1.8 million inhabitants.

Northern Mexico shares a border with the United States of America stretching over 3,000 kilometres. The Rio Grande river creates the border from the city of Juarez all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Mexico is also home to 2 mountain ranges that span from North to South, the Sierra Madre Oriental range and the Sierra Madre Occidental range. Both of which are extensions from the Rocky Mountains located in the United States. The Sierra Nevada, or the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, runs from East to West in the center of the country. The Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range runs along the southern border from Michoacan to Oaxaca.

Mexico has one of the world’s most diverse climate systems. The tropic of cancer divides the country into temperate zones in the North and tropical zones in the South. Land that is North of the 24th parallel is cooler during Winter months and land South of the 24th parallel remains high in temperature throughout the year.

Mexico’s climate and unique culture draws visitors from all over the globe, and Mexico has been named one of the most visited countries in the world.
