The History of Advent Calendars

Much of the Western World’s annual calendar is connected to religious dates and celebrations; the Holiday Season is no exception and touches a number of different religions and cultures. An Advent Calendar celebrates the days leading up to Christ’s Birth, specifically the 24th of December with the Nativity Scene and the 25th of December with the adoration of The Shepards. German Lutherans developed the Advent Calendar so children would open and reveal, day by day, events leading up to Christmas Day. This started sometime in the 19th Century so the calendars are not deeply rooted in our culture. That said, we have fond memories of small bites of chocolate hidden behind each day’s door, a Christmas scene laid out in cardboard, as a part of the annual decorations around the home.
