Just off the California coast lies an island chain often shrouded in fog and mystery. It is home to tiny island foxes found nowhere else on the planet, gigantic blue whales with hearts the size of cars, and towering underwater forests of kelp with more tenants than a skyscraper. Add to that ancient redwood canoe builders, land-hungry Spanish explorers, curious scientists, and enterprising urchin divers in search of a new type of gold. Heck with dragons. Here there be wonder. Welcome to the Channel Islands.

Island Visions is a tome of knowledge and tales from these finned, flippered, and footed sages. Diverse voices from the past, present, and future bring to life the importance of this tiny island chain on both a local and global level. Home to humans for over 10,000 years, the Channel Islands now serve as a model for how we can protect and conserve the most vulnerable spaces on our planet. Throw on your flippers, turn the page, and dive in.

Review For Island Visions

I've sold text and trade books for Doubleday, Harcourt Brace, Holt Rinehart and Winston, Wiley and W.W. Norton, and have rarely seen as wonderful a book on science, geography and conservation. You have really hit the ball out of the park with this title, that I hope will be in print for many years! Any student or family is lucky to own a copy! All the Best, Michael Ward

Island Visions

This is a great book of information and illustrations about the Santa Barbara Channel Islands marine life and wildlife. I purchased one for my grandson and I wish we had this book in my science classes in junior high and Highschool. Super for all ages!

Wonderful resource!

Great colors, graphic designs, and topic coverage. Would be wonderful if it had been designed/edited by a group of experienced teachers or an instructional designer and if it had included more information/instructions/ideas on how to integrate the information into a variety of learning situations. The reading and content level of the sections varies a great deal. Love the use of mostly authentic sources and the timely information covered!

Beautifully produced AND researched!

As one of the Indigenous peoples asked to contribute, I appreciate the editors for looking at context and stewardship of Native California. I only wish this idea had been more fully developed; at the same time, you are far and away ahead of most other textbooks in this area, and have created a truly powerful resource for children and their parents. Kudos!
