More than 65 percent of Earth’s 8.1 billion people have access to the internet. But the quality and speed of the internet available varies greatly with geography.
Using open data from Ookla, LLC—the communications company behind the SpeedTest.net platform—we’ve analyzed internet speeds across the globe. The results show that countries differ greatly in the quality of the internet speeds, and whether local internet quality is driven by fixed connection types (like WiFi or Ethernet) or mobile connections (like LTE, 5G, and similar). Some countries, like Australia, even show major differences within their own borders. And there’s much more to internet quality than download speeds alone.
The internet continues to connect us, bringing us closer to one another despite geographic distances. And new technologies, applications, and ways to communicate will continue to bring people together. Data like this helps us track our progress and provide new insights on how, and where, we connect with the world around us.
